10th June 2015

Notes:
·         Music promotion is an advert for the artist and the song. Adverts not just entertainment.

How is the music video similar to the car advert?
The car advert cuts to the rhythm of the music
Many camera shots like the music videos
Narrative/storyline throughout the car adverts just like music videos

Narrative in music promos
Traditional and classic narrative structure?
Narrative types- Linear and Non linear
Linear- chronological order, time goes beginning, middle and end
Non-linear- non chronological order, flashbacks, montage, ellipsis

Closed or open ended?
Closed- has a fixed ending
Open- open to interpretation: - inception, shutter island
Circular- movie ends where it starts
Single standard, multi stand

Todorov’s theory – Theory of equilibrium and disequilibrium
1. A state of equilibrium (all as it should be)
2. A disruption of order (by an event)
3. A recognition that the disorder has occurred
4. An attempt to repair the damage
5. A return to equilibrium but is now different

Synaesthesia
A condition in which one type of stimulation evokes the sensation of another, as when the hearing of a sound produces the visualization of a colour. :
Andrew Goodwin says that music promos can interpret the song lyrics in many ways.

  • Illustration- The promo basically illustrates the ideas/ narrative in the song lyrics- Eminem ‘Stan’

  • Amplification- Use a key idea/ image from the lyrics and develops it into a concept within the promo. A link remains between the lyric and the promo- Take a theme and represent I by thinking out of the box with the idea.

  • Disjuncture- The promo bears no resemblance to the lyric or its meaning; abstract often seen as unconventional/ arty videos. Creates a new range of meanings for the song
